My first week in Jamaica and in the UNEP CAR/RCU office has been exciting and informative. I’ve learned a lot about UNEP and the projects the office is currently working on by reading though various documents and by talking to the staff. Everyone in the UNEP CAR/RCU office is very helpful and welcoming;

I am really looking forward to spending the summer with them. Learning about Jamaica and its culture, and meeting locals has been a wonderful experience. It is a beautiful and friendly country with many places to explore.

I am going to be working with the Assessment and Management of Environmental Pollution (AMEP) sub-programme during the three months I am here. Since the first week has been devoted to learning about the programme, I do not know exactly the specific tasks I will be assigned to. I am excited to start working on specific projects and anticipate a very busy summer.

Challenges Faced
It has been challenging to get back into the office mode such as waking up early every morning and sitting at a desk all day. Since I have been in school the past year, I am not used to having such a structured day. I am sure that next week will be much easier. It has also been challenging to find everyday goods such as food and home products. However, that is the case in any new country or place you move to.

Lessons Learnt
Jamaica is a wonderful place with a diverse population. I can’t wait to explore the island, and contribute to the mission of UNEP!
