Has it only been three weeks?

First week: Action from day1!

On my first day I was told I was to be lent to the UN Environment Caribbean Sub-Regional Office next door, which would be hosting a conference on waste management in the upcoming days. Participants included government representatives from various Caribbean states as well as from several mostly Jamaican organizations. I helped in the preparation and organization of the conference and functioned as conference photographer. This was an exciting start to the internship.

Second & Third Week: Back to work

Afterwards, I started my actual work as communications intern. My tasks include coming up with communication strategies for projects or reports, editing newsletters and designing simple info graphics and contributing to the social media platforms. On one day I joined a trip to a pig farm where I took pictures and videos and therefore contributed to and learned more about the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the UN’s work.

I enjoy working with very nice colleagues and living in Jamaica, where every day holds a challenge as well as beautiful surprises.

Challenges faced

  • Filter Information
  • Organize tasks
  • Set priorities
  • Cope with restrictive editing programme

Lessons learnt

  • Don’t wear your nicest clothes when going on a field trip to a pig farm.
  • Yes, there is going to be another acronym.
  • There are a lot of different UN organizations and sub-organizations.
  • When you offer your abilities and give input, you will always get something out of it.
