After I applied for an internship at the United Nations Environment Programme Caribbean Regional Coordinating Unit earlier this year, I was not expecting such a speedy response from their office and was surprised that I was actually accepted – I mean after all it’s the UN !

My internship at UNEP CEP began approximately 1 month and 3 weeks ago and it has been wonderful so far. I am enjoying working with this regional organization; between staff interaction and working on outreach projects, the experience has been pretty awesome.

I arrived in Kingston, Jamaica Saturday night and was fortunate enough to meet a Jamaican man who generously offered me a ride to the house where I’m staying (and who had the same name as me, naturally). Since my arrival I have continued to find Jamaica to be a warm and welcoming place.

I am now just over half way done with my 3 month internship, and everything continues to go well. I have been spending much of my time doing desk based research, and reading up on current wastewater treatment initiatives for the GEF CReW project under the AMEP sub-programme.

With only one week left in my internship, I can say this has been an interesting experience. I have had the opportunity to be a part of various programmes, with projects in different stages of development. I spent much of my last month finishing up an improved draft on Sustainable Financing Mechanisms for Water and Wastewater Treatment Projects.

UNEP, CEP, SPAW, GEF…these are just a few of the many acronyms that I have researched, read about and even referenced during the course of my academic life. But even then, these remained distant representations of entities/programmes that I could only dream about someday working with. This internship was the beginning of making that dream a reality.

This first week of my internship with the Caribbean Environment Programme has so far been a very interesting experience. I am helping with the organization of the 2nd LBS-STAC meeting in Managua, Nicaragua and in doing so I’m learning a lot about how to engage with different governmental organizations and international institutions.
