Environmental Experts meet to discuss the state of Caribbean Environment

Kingston, Jamaica | September 4-6, 2018

Caribbean environmental experts will meet to share experiences and work collaboratively to produce environmental information that supports decision and policy-making at the Second Technical Meeting of the Latin America and Caribbean Initiative for Sustainable Development (ILAC) Caribbean Working Group on Environmental Indicators scheduled to be held September 4-6, 2018 at the Knutsford Court Hotel, in Kingston, Jamaica.

The experts will join to work on the different challenges that surround the production and usage of environmental information in the Caribbean Small Island Developing States, with a special focus on waste management systems, disaster risk reduction strategies and the health of oceans. Participants will also improve their ability to communicate this data in order to support policymakers in decision-making and ensure continued sustainable development in the region.

“Environmental Indicators are important for measuring the achievement of Sustainable Development Goals in the Caribbean Region.” Francesco Gaetani, Programme Officer at the UN Environment Latin America and Caribbean Officer says. “With these indicators, countries are able to celebrate their advances, implement innovations to ensure their continued success and share experiences to assist other countries to strengthen their progress towards a sustainable environment for their citizens”.

The three-day meeting will further engage the participants in discussions on Environmental Information Systems to strengthen their ability to gather, process and present data to report on the state of the environment and specific issues relating to waste management, ocean monitoring and disaster risk reduction, review their progress towards sustainable development and support key decision makers and public policy through the effective communication of environmental information.
