The work of the SPAW Sub-programme includes conservation activities for threatened and endangered species as listed in the Annexes to the SPAW Protocol. A SPAW species database is updated, maintained and disseminated in collaboration with relevant partner institutions; selection and implementation of priority actions in the National Sea Turtle Recovery Action Plans (see Technical Reports for STRAPS), and implementation of the recently adopted Action Plan for the Conservation of Marine Mammals (MMAP) in the WCR.

Activities for the conservation of marine mammals in collaboration with partners such as the U.S. Marine Mammal Commission, NOAA, Mote Marine Laboratory, WDCS, ECCEA, ECCN, IFAW, IUCN Species Survival Commission and in coordination with the SPAW RAC in Guadeloupe are ongoing, including implementation of the updated regional manatee management plan; and implementation of priority actions  of the recently approved “Action Plan for the Conservation of Marine Mammals (MMAP) in the Wider Caribbean Region”.

Partnerships are also established with the Society for the Conservation and Study of Caribbean Birds (SCSCB) and BirdLife with involvement from the SPAW RAC, for the conservation of migratory birds such as the West Indian Whistling duck, through education and capacity building activities utilizing an ecosystem approach for the integrated management of wetlands. Capacity building activities are ongoing in collaboration with FAO/WECAFC for the management of the conch and lobster fisheries, and Sustainable fishing practices and alternative livelihoods in target communities implemented under the ICRAN-MAR Project and currently under the small grants fund for under the CaMPAM Network and Forum.

Support to the control of alien and invasive species in cooperation with key partners (GISP, CI, TNC and IMO), is an ongoing activity, and to this end, in collaboration with CABI a regional assessment on capacities for the management of invasive species was undertaken.
